Aftercare

Tattoo aftercare instructions

A new tattoo is an open wound for the first couple of weeks. Follow the routine below and your tattoo from Black Diamond will heal cleanly, hold its color, and age the way Sam designed it to.

First 24 hours: keep the bandage on

Leave the initial wrap or Saniderm on for the time Sam recommends (usually 2–24 hours, longer for Saniderm). When you remove it, gently wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

Wash gently 2–3 times a day

Use clean hands — no washcloths. Rinse with lukewarm water, lather lightly with fragrance-free soap, then rinse again. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Never rub a healing tattoo.

Moisturize with fragrance-free lotion

Starting on day 2 or 3, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion (Lubriderm, Aveeno, Cetaphil) 2–3 times a day. Too much lotion suffocates the tattoo — a light, even coat is plenty.

Avoid sun, soaking, and picking

For the first 2–3 weeks: no direct sun, no pools, no hot tubs, no baths, no ocean. Showers are fine. Do not pick or scratch when it scabs and peels — that's the ink trying to set.

Tattoo healing timeline

Days 1–3

Oozing, redness, and mild swelling are normal. Wash and moisturize on schedule.

Days 4–14

Tattoo scabs and peels in flakes. Itchy — do not scratch. Keep moisturized.

Weeks 2–4

Surface heals but deeper layers are still settling. Tattoo may look dull or cloudy — this is normal.

Weeks 4–8

Fully healed. Colors brighten. Start sunscreen (SPF 30+) any time the tattoo will see sun.
